RE: Un-install help please!

Sorry I don't have that information at this time. The last one was in June. I had one on a friends computer who was complaining about a slow startup after he got rid of Norton for AVG. I checked to make sure he did a correct uninstall and then looked using msconfig. Sure enough there was a running program. My best guess is that he had one of the Security bundles installed but only used the antivirus but he had uninstalled everything because nothing was in add/delete programs. I might be wrong but I recall it being the update program from Norton.

RE: Un-install help please!

Unfortunately, doing the uninstall of Norton does not get rid of some programs that exec every time the computer is turned on. After the uninstall, reboot the computer and exec msconfig. Look to see if any norton program is still start up, and unclick it. Start up the task manager. Look and see if any norton progam is running. That program also needs to be deleted. This is also true of Macafee.

RE: Inspiron 1150 problems

Hard to believe that what you paid 4 years ago would cost the same today. I think a few of us would be curious to know what is so specific to you that would cost 1400 today that wouldn't be 5 times the machine. I can see that you can ramp up a computer to cost 1400 today, but it would take that to replace just what you bought 4 years ago? Must be something very specific.

RE: Charging Problem with Dell Latitude

The closest I have had is 2 Dells within the past 2 months (both 3 1/2 years old or older) is that 110 power supply connection would not stay on 110, and therefore would not charge the battery. I realize that from what you posted, that probably isn't the problem. But if you determine that is close, I found a person who resodded? the connection for $80. Dell wanted $250 to do it.

RE: Updating and breaking applications

Wittmeba: Your prejudice against freeware and probably shareware is unfounded for the most part. Granted there is some bad freeware out there but if you are cautious of what you look for and install, there is no problem. If you look at my past posts you will see that I have installed 100's of freeware products and am currently running over 80 of them on my Vista machine. I do use a free uninstaller that gets rid of registry entries and file entries that the programs uninstall doesn't delete. I will have to admit I don't run registry cleaners any more because they can and do delete items that aren't always the right ones, and also because the registry is so bloated anyway, getting rid of a few entries is meaningless. If you run an uninstaller you will see (if you haven't already) what some programs from legitimate vendors do to the registry and what extras they install. So far my worst one is Itunes which inserts over 200 items there with all of it's installs plus the extra programs you get without having a choice. While that is the worst, it's not the only one by far. Adobe, Kodak photo, HP printer, just to name a few.

RE: Reinstall of XP3

Funny thing about that hacktool.bvu. A search shows that only AVG finds it (at least under that name) and that it is usually in c:\hp\bin. No one had a solution that I could pass on. But it is highly suspicious that it is a real Trojan or virus. So the question to me is, what else is in the HP/bin subdir? Is that a valid HP subdir for an hp printer? If so than it is probably okay. As far as the malware goes, it is important to know where AVG found them. Were they cookies? I know that AVG reports some Firefox cookies as malware although 194 is a very high number. If possible, trace the identified malware back to where it is located on your computer. Since it is more than likely a cookie, try to indentify the site it is reporting from. Also I run for different spyware programs and I have never that that high a number of malware. I have also downloaded and run at least 300 programs since April plus visiting a huge number of sites and I never come close to what you are seeing. If you want my best guess, these are all false positives.

RE: How to speed up Windows XP or Vista

The reason I added XP to this is that a lot of these ideas work with XP also.

RE: How do I resize a picture for posting?

This program is free and interfaces with windows explorer so you don't need another photo program. Install and right click on any photo and it will resize it for you and then it makes a copy of the resized. http://www.xemico.com/photogadget/freeware.html

How to speed up Windows XP or Vista

I am posting this because a lot of users ask the question on how come their computer is so slow. Following is a link to a MS site that goes into easy to read detail for speeding up your computer. You can download the PDF to your computer. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=ab377598-a637-432c-a3c8-1607ab629201&displaylang=en

RE: Reinstall of XP3

There is something missing from your story. Something has to run. The adware can't get there without you getting onto the Net and going to sites that have malware. Next, AVG is for virus and won't catch all the adware. In fact there is no single program out there that will get all of everything. I think that what you have done is reinstalled some software you had used before you formated that had the trojan and adware.

RE: System Mechanic Rip Off

I think you will find that more and more software companies are going to annual pricing. I have seen this before of course with some antivirus software such as Norton etc. This is very simple for them to do, just see who many of the shareware programs do it or let you run free for 30 days. What I would do is look at all the features you actually use and find freeware that will do the same thing. I will guarantee you that there is freeware software out there to do that. If you post what features you use, you will get many responses regarding freeware.

RE: Desk Top Monitor Shuts Off -- CPU Doesn't On Shut Down

There are many hits from Google about E-Machines not turning off no matter what OS you are running. I suggest you do a search and follow those threads. Myself, I first say this problem about 6 years or so ago. They would even turn themselves on.

RE: HP Computer is a lemon - What would you do?

Here we go again. Someone says Vista is bad, look at what problems some users have had. But then, no one says what these problems are. There are many many more users that don't have a problem than there are those with a problem which has probably been corrected by now. Most of these problems have to do with vendors not updating their drivers/software/whatever. Then there are those that say something won't work without checking it out. For instance, Office 97 works on my Vista native. My four year old HP printer works okay, but there isn't new drivers for it that would make it better. A lot of people have trouble tring to upgrade???? to XP from Vista because they have new hardware that doesn't have drivers for XP. Instead of paying attention to users that have agendas, try it out and see what happens.

RE: Computer turns itself back on

Usually it happens with the cheaper brands such as Packard Bell, but even Mac Power Book has had this problem. It has been associated with the power supply for some. Although it just started, you might want to swap it out for a new one.

RE: Can't Download Zone

Zone Alarm works with VISTA I have been runing it since April. The security patch from MS was for XP and had nothing to do with Vista/Zone Alarm You do want a firewall and AVG 8 free is not a firewall.

RE: AVG 8.0 Tying up computer during scan??

Y-Guy stated it correctly. All these types of scans (virus, malware, spybot, adaware) hit the hard drive solidly unless slowed down. That means of course that anything tries to start up or get something from the drive, or write to the drive is going to be slowed down noticeably.

Lwmuddy: were still back at the starting point. Can you explain further what your computer is doing that you say is a virus? Waiting

RE: computer crash

Contrary to what you say, not having a popup blocker is not what caused your problem. Maybe keying on a popup is what caused your problem although I doubt it. I think something else is going on here. I have never had a problem with popups downloading from Amazon. Also, you don't explain what the problem is. Virus programs only stop and catch virus's. There is more here than what meets the eye.
